Athletes who may not be podium finishers (or even competitive) can engage in lasting and valuable sponsorship relationships.

It’s about creating mutually beneficial relationships and promoting a business to a target audience.

This is something that anyone can do, if they are willing to commit to the process of seeking out the right sponsors and working with them to ensure they can deliver great sponsor benefits, then making sure that they follow through with what they have promised. Some of the most lucrative sponsorship deals go to athletes who don’t finish in the top 5 or even 10, but are great ambassadors for their sponsors and their sport.

Sponsorship is abundant. There is more than enough sponsorship available for athletes; it’s just a matter of connecting with the right companies in the right way. When you start to see that sponsoring an athlete can be a more powerful marketing and advertising tool for an organisation than say a traditional magazine article you will see how the approach outlined in my book (Sponsorship for Athletes) will enable you to engage with potential sponsors in a really effective way.

There is a misconception that there is ‘no money out there’ but when you look at how much most companies are spending on redundant and ineffective forms of advertising, you will see how that money can be much better directed and spent on hard working resourceful athletes such as yourself.

Sponsorship is rarely about the competitions or events but much more about the peripheral activities such as media, social media and public relations activities.
